The castle, built by the Counts of Veldenz and the Dukes of Palatinate-Zweibrücken, dates back to 1200. It started out in clear violation of building law. The Counts of Veldenz did not have permission to put a castle on the property of the bishops of Reims. But they did it anyway for a very practical reason. Instead of just guarding the land by order, they wanted to own it themselves. And it worked in their favour. Today, in times more peaceful than in the Middle Ages, there is no danger when you approach the castle. On the contrary, if you want to learn about the tradition of the travelling musicians from the region, you should definitely pay a visit.
The castle is open to the public all year round.
Make your visit to Lichtenberg Castle a very special one. We offer castle tours and museum tours for families and small groups by appointment.
In the castle grounds there is a modern youth hostel, a restaurant and 2 museums: Musikantenland Museum and pre-historic museum Geoskop.
Lichtenberg Castle also hosts a variety of events, including the herb market, medieval market, medieval Christmas market, as well as many concerts on the castle grounds and in the chamber music room in the tithe barn.
